5 Kid-Friendly Activities When Safe at Home

05/20/20

Kids are sure to get cabin fever while they’re safe at home. We’ve come up with ideas that can help them beat boredom and stay busy.

With school canceled in California for the remainder of the year, this can be a difficult time for parents and children whose routines are thrown outside the normal. With that in mind, we’ve put together some of the best kid-friendly activities to navigate this unprecedented time.

1. Take a virtual tour

Just because you’re safe at home doesn’t mean you can’t explore and experience new adventures! A plethora of museums are offering virtual tours, allowing you and your children to explore art from around the world in the comfort of your living room. You can virtually travel to places like the Louvre, the Vatican Museum (the tour of which includes a 360-degree view of the Sistine Chapel), and the Van Gogh museum.

2. Try your hand at cooking and baking

Whether it’s mixing cookies together or learning how to fry the perfect egg, there is no better time to teach your kids to bake or cook—an activity that is both creative and educational. Cooking With Kids contains kid-tested recipes, activities for kids, and how-to videos that break down the basics of achieving success in the kitchen. This website will have you and your kids mixing and grooving in no time!

3. Do a scavenger hunt

Collect some items and hide them around your house or outside to create a scavenger hunt for your kids. This is a great activity that allows your kids to move around and get exercise while simultaneously challenging their minds.

4. Listen to a podcast

Consider checking out kid-friendly podcasts. Whether you are looking for a bedtime story, an educational listen, or something for the whole family to enjoy together, there are podcasts to help entertain your child during this time. Consider checking out Story Time, But Why: A Podcast For Curious Kids, or Book Club For Kids.

5. Watch a zoo livestream

If your kids are animal lovers, take them on an e-tour of the Cincinnati Zoo! The zoo streams animals on their Facebook page daily at 3 PM ET. You will also have the chance to meet Fiona, a baby hippopotamus who was born six weeks premature and the smallest hippo to survive.

From educational activities to hands-on fun, there are so many ways to keep your children active and engaged.
