Best Books By Newport Natives

Immerse yourself in the California sunshine by reading some of the best books written by Newport Beach residents

Nestled in the heart of Orange County, Newport Beach is famous for its luxurious homes and charming golden coastline. It’s no wonder that this cozy town with a beautiful ocean backdrop has inspired residents to write enlightening and diverse books. With summer just around the corner, we’ve put together some of the best books written by Newport Beach natives.

Dean Koontz

A long-time Newport Beach resident, Dean Koontz is well-known for his suspense thrillers. He has published a rich plethora of gripping novels, with many of them landing on The New York Times Best Seller list, including 14 hardcovers and 16 paperbacks achieving the number-one position. Some of his most popular novels include Night Chills, Whispers, The Mask, or Phantoms. His work has sold an astounding 500 million copies and has been translated into 38 languages. In addition to landing at the top of The New York Times Best Seller list, Koontz’s publications have experienced success worldwide from Japan to Sweden. What makes his novels even more fascinating is the fact that most of them are set in Orange County.

Jeff Delaney

Not only is Jeff Delaney a Newport Beach resident, but he has also written two books that explore the history and evolution of the now flourishing Newport Beach. His first book, Newport Beach’s Balboa and Balboa Island, eloquently explains the rich history of the area. Delaney’s second book, published in 2011, is simply titled Newport Beach: Then and Now. Written in a style that is both educational and engaging, this piece of work delves into the fascinating origins of the seaside community, from its humble beginnings as a shipping port to its development into a retreat for a variety of characters—such as movie stars and gamblers—to what it is now: a reputable beach community with luxury Orange County real estate and a desirable vacation destination.
