Costa Mesa’s dining scene has welcomed a new destination for Japanese cuisine. Sushi Hassun is now open at SOCO and The OC Mix, bringing traditional sushi, omakase and seasonal izakaya-style dining to the design-focused Costa Mesa destination.

A New Sushi Restaurant in Costa Mesa

The name Hassun comes from a traditional element of Japanese kaiseki dining, centered around a thoughtfully composed selection of small dishes that reflects the season. That philosophy carries into the restaurant, where the menu emphasizes balance, seasonality and high-quality ingredients.

At the helm is Executive Chef Susumu Ii, a master sushi chef with nearly 45 years of restaurant experience. Orange County diners may already recognize Chef Ii from Michelin-recognized Sushi Ii in Newport Beach, which he opened in 2020. At Hassun, he brings his signature approach to a menu built around the freshest fish available each day.

Sushi Hassun offers several ways to experience Chef Ii’s cooking.

The omakase experience changes with seasonality and market availability, moving through a progression of sushi, sashimi, seasonal small plates, soup and dessert. For guests looking for a more casual meal, the restaurant also serves à la carte sushi and izakaya-style dishes designed for sharing.

The menu extends beyond nigiri with sashimi selections, traditional and contemporary rolls, tempura and small plates. At lunch, options include chirashi, donburi, a Shokado bento and sushi sets, alongside a dedicated lunch omakase.

After building a following through Sushi Ii in Newport Beach, the chef brings decades of experience and a deep respect for Japanese culinary tradition to the new Costa Mesa restaurant. His cooking emphasizes restraint, precise technique and allowing the natural character of each ingredient to remain at the forefront.
